About this species
Steatogenys elegans, the barred knifefish, is a species of freshwater ray-finned fish belonging to the family Rhamphichthyidae, the sand knifefishes. This fish is found in tropical South America. It is the type species of its genus. It is an electric fish found in a wide range of freshwater habitats in the Amazon, Orinoco and Essequibo river basins. It reaches almost 30 cm (1 ft) in total length.

Steatogenys elegans is een vissensoort uit de familie van de Amerikaanse mesalen (Hypopomidae). De wetenschappelijke naam van de soort is voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd in 1880 door Steindachner.

秀丽脂颊电鳗，为辐鳍鱼纲电鳗目短吻电鳗科的其中一种，为热带淡水鱼，分布于南美洲亚马逊河流域，体长可达29.4公分，栖息在底中层水域，生活习性不明，可做为观赏鱼。
