About this species
Electrophorus electricus is the best-known species of electric eel. It is a South American electric fish. Until the discovery of two additional species in 2019, the genus was classified as the monotypic, with this species the only one in the genus. Despite the name, it is not an eel, but rather a knifefish. It is considered as a freshwater teleost which contains an electrogenic tissue that produces electric discharges.

La llamada anguila eléctrica (Electrophorus electricus), también llamada temblón, temblador, gimnoto, pilaké o poraquê, es una especie de pez de la familia Gymnotidae. Puede emitir descargas eléctricas de hasta 850 voltios a partir de un grupo de células especializadas. Emplea las descargas eléctricas para cazar presas, para defenderse y para comunicarse. Es la especie tipo del género Electrophorus, el cual está integrado por otras dos especies.

电鳗是一种以能短暂强力放电而闻名的淡水鱼类。体型粗圆而长，最大可长达250公分左右，栖息在南美洲的亚马逊河及奥里诺科河流域，生性昼伏夜出，以捕食小鱼为主。被发现闻名是早在16世纪，西班牙探险者乘马渡过亚马逊河小支流时，数次马腿踩到电鳗被电才发现。
电鳗虽名为“鳗”，但并不是鳗的一种，在生物分类上，电鳗和鲶鱼更为接近，皆置于骨鳔总目之下。尽管如此，电鳗不能叫作电鲶，因为电鲶已是存在于非洲的鱼类名称。
