About this species
The snake mackerel (Gempylus serpens) is the sole species of fish in the monotypic genus Gempylus, belonging to the family Gempylidae (which is also referred to generally as "snake mackerels"). It is found worldwide in tropical and subtropical oceans between the latitudes of 42°N and 40°S; adults are known to stray into temperate waters. It is found to a depth of 600 meters (2,000 feet). Populations of the snake mackerel from the Atlantic and the Indo-Pacific differ in vertebral count (51–55 versus 48–50) and number of first dorsal fin spines (30–32 versus 26–30), and so may represent separate species.

La caballa serpiente (Gempylus serpens), también conocida como Escolar de canal, Escolar serpiente o Dómine añil. es la única especie de pez del género monotípico Gempylus, perteneciente a la familia Gempylidae (que también se conoce generalmente como "cabalas serpiente"). Se encuentra en todo el mundo en océanos tropicales y subtropicales entre las latitudes de 42°N y 40°S ; se sabe que los adultos se pierden en aguas templadas . Se encuentra a una profundidad de 600 metros (1968,5 pies). Las poblaciones de caballa serpiente del Atlántico y el Indo-Pacífico difieren en el recuento de vértebras (51–55 frente a 48–50) y el número de espinas de la primera aleta dorsal (30–32 frente a 26–30), por lo que pueden representar especies separadas.

黑刃蛇鲭（学名：Gempylus serpens），又名黑刃魣，为带䲠科蛇鲭属下的一个种。分布于全球热带及亚热带海域，栖息深度可达600公尺，本鱼体细长而侧扁，口大具利齿，体色深褐色，鱼鳍黑色，背鳍硬棘27-33枚，背鳍软条10-14枚，臀鳍硬棘3枚，臀鳍软条10-12枚，脊椎骨48-55个，体长可达100公分，为外洋性鱼类，成鱼会做垂直性迁徙，属肉食性，以鱼类、甲壳类、头足类为食，可做为食用鱼及饵鱼。
