Gasteracantha cancriformis (spinybacked orbweaver) is a species of orb-weaver spider (family Araneidae). It is widely distributed in the New World.
The genus name Gasteracantha derives from the Ancient Greek γαστήρ (gastḗr), meaning "belly", and ἄκανθα (ákantha), meaning "thorn", while the specific epithet cancriformis derives from the Latin words cancer ("crab") and forma ("shape, form, appearance").

Gasteracantha cancriformis is een spinnensoort uit de familie van de wielwebspinnen. Vooral de vrouwtjes zijn zeer opvallend door de puntige uitsteeksels en felle kleuren. De naam is afgeleid van het Grieks en het Latijn:
Gasteracantha (Grieks): γαστήρ (gaster; buik) en ἄκανθα (akantha; hoorn)
Cancriformis (Latijn): cancer (krab) en forma (vorm)
De benaming is een beschrijving van de vorm van de spin: krabvormig en met hoornachtige uitsteeksels op het abdomen. Het dier komt voornamelijk voor in Midden- en Zuid-Amerika.
