About this species
Eugenia uniflora is a flowering plant in the family Myrtaceae, native to tropical and subtropical South America's east coast, ranging from Suriname, French Guiana to southern Brazil, as well as Uruguay and parts of Paraguay and Argentina.
It is also known as Brazilian cherry, Cayenne cherry, cerisier carré, monkimonki kersie, ñangapirí, pitanga, shimarucu, and Suriname cherry.
It is often used in gardens as a hedge or screen.
It produces small, ribbed fruits (2 to 4 centimetres or 3⁄4 to 1-1⁄2 in), starting as green, then ranging through orange, scarlet, and maroon as they ripen.
The tree was introduced to Bermuda for ornamental purposes, but is now out of control and listed as an invasive species.
The tree has also been introduced to Florida.

Eugenia uniflora L., también conocido en idioma guarani como ñangapirí, pitanga, pitangueira, pitanguero, es un árbol pequeño o arbusto de la familia de las Mirtáceas. Es nativa de Paraguay, Argentina y Brasil. Es una especie muy adaptable a diferentes condiciones de clima y suelo. Debido a la excelencia de sus frutos, así como a su uso ornamental, la pitanga ha sido introducida en diferentes regiones desde América del Sur y América Central, el Caribe, Florida y California en Estados Unidos, Hawái, Sudeste asiático, China, India, Sri Lanka, México, Madagascar, África del Sur, Israel y varios países del Mediterráneo.
Ha sido registrada como invasora en 56 países e islas (Australia, Estados Unidos de América)

红果仔（学名：Eugenia uniflora），也称棱果蒲桃，是原产于热带南美洲东海岸、苏里南至巴西南部地区，以及巴拉圭和乌拉圭的部份地区的热带植物，常绿灌木或小乔木，桃金娘科，叶对生，长卵形，近无柄，长2.5-5厘米，先端渐尖，浓绿油亮。新生幼叶褐红色，具有观赏性。花白色，单生于花柄之顶；稍芳香；萼片4枚。果实扁圆形，熟时红色，最后转为深紫色。熟果口味特别，不具有苦味或刺激性。
