Het dier behoort tot het geslacht Eriophora. De wetenschappelijke naam van de soort werd voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd in 1844 door Carl Ludwig Koch.

Eriophora ravilla es un arácnido de la familia Araneidae. Esta especie fue descrita por Koch en 1844, originalmente bajo el nombre Epeira ravilla. El nombre del género Eriophora deriva del latín y su significado es "cargadora de lana". El epíteto específico, ravilla, puede significar algún tipo de dedicatoria, debido a que Ravilla es un apellido común.
