Astronomical prediction from a harmonic model fitted to the published tide tables. Wind, river discharge and heavy rain can change the real water level. Always check with local authorities before heading out.
Weather: Open-Meteo (ECMWF, GFS, ICON, UKMO, Météo-France models), air quality: CAMS. Official weather warnings come from the Meteorologische Dienst Suriname; official tide tables from the Maritieme Autoriteit Suriname.
Frequently Asked Questions
How accurate is the rain forecast for Suriname?
Tropical showers are hard to pin down, so instead of trusting one model we compare four: the European ECMWF, the American GFS, the German ICON and the British UKMO ensembles. When they agree, the forecast is reliable; when they disagree you see it, and an umbrella is the safe bet. The 2-hour rain line uses 15-minute data and is the most precise part of the forecast.
When is the rainy season in Suriname?
Suriname has two rainy and two dry seasons: the long rainy season from about mid-April to mid-August, the long dry season from mid-August to early December, a short rainy season from December to early February and a short dry season from February to April.
What is a spring tide (springtij) and why does it matter?
Around new and full moon the sun and moon pull together and the tides run higher and lower than usual. On the Suriname River the highest of these lift the water more than 2.3 m above low water, and if heavy rain falls around high tide the drains cannot empty, so low-lying streets near the river can flood. This page flags the spring tides that are among the highest of the year.
How are the tide times calculated?
From a harmonic model fitted to the published tide tables for Paramaribo, Nieuw Nickerie and the Marowijne mouth, with the 18.6-year lunar cycle built in. Times are typically within about 10 minutes and heights within a few centimetres of the official tables. Wind, river discharge and heavy rain can shift the real water level, so always check with local authorities before heading out.
How high is the UV index in Suriname?
Very high most of the year: UV 11 or more around midday is common because Suriname lies close to the equator. Sunscreen, a hat and shade between about 10:00 and 15:00 are a good idea even when it is cloudy.
What is Saharan dust?
Between roughly May and September, winds carry fine dust from the Sahara across the Atlantic. It makes the sky hazy and can bother people with asthma or other lung conditions. The air quality card warns when dust levels over your district rise.
Does Suriname get hurricanes?
Suriname lies south of the Atlantic hurricane belt and is very rarely hit directly. Heavy tropical showers and thunderstorms are the main weather risk.
