Suriname is more than 90 percent forest, and guided hikes are the best way to experience it. Short walks start just outside Paramaribo at Peperpot, while Brownsberg, Raleighvallen with the Voltzberg granite dome, Kabalebo and the far south around Palumeu offer longer trails.
Multi-day trips combine boat travel, hammock camps and summit climbs such as Mount Kasikasima. Always go with a guide: trails are unmarked in places and the forest is easy to get lost in.
Good to know
- Getting there
- Peperpot is a short drive from Paramaribo. Brownsberg and Raleighvallen are reached by road (Raleighvallen about 4 to 5 hours) or small plane, Kabalebo and Palumeu by charter flight.
- Best time to go
- The long dry season, mid-August to late November, has the driest trails. From late April to mid-August heavy rain makes paths muddy and slippery.
- Time needed
- From a half-day walk at Peperpot to 5 or 8 day expeditions in the interior. The Kasikasima climb alone takes about 7 hours there and back.
- Entry and permits
- Guided day hikes at Peperpot start around 45 euro per adult. Interior packages with flights, meals and lodging start from several hundred euro; check with the operator.
- Tips
- Bring closed walking shoes, light long sleeves, a rain jacket, insect repellent, sun protection and plenty of water. A reasonable level of fitness is needed for summit hikes.
