The historic inner city of Paramaribo has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2002 for its Dutch colonial street plan and wooden buildings. A walk of a few hours covers Fort Zeelandia, the Waterkant along the Suriname River, Independence Square, the Central Market, and the mosque and synagogue standing side by side on Keizerstraat.
