Rivers and creeks are Suriname's natural roads, and paddling them is a quiet way to see birds, monkeys and riverside life. Popular options are day trips on the Brokopondo reservoir, blackwater creeks such as the Upper Coesewijne and the Peperpot waterways, and longer kayak trips on the Saramacca and Suriname rivers.
In the interior, travel to lodges is usually by motorised dugout canoe (korjaal), so even lodge stays include time on the water.
Good to know
- Getting there
- Most day trips include transport from Paramaribo. The Upper Coesewijne is about 2.5 hours by road, the Brokopondo reservoir and Atjoni on the Suriname River are further south.
- Best time to go
- Possible all year. Water is higher in the rainy seasons (late April to mid-August and December to early February); in the dry season rapids and rock pools (sulas) are more exposed.
- Time needed
- Half-day paddles at Peperpot, full-day reservoir or creek trips, or 2 to 8 day kayak expeditions.
- Entry and permits
- Day trips run from about 60 to 70 euro per person; a 2-day Saramacca kayak trip around 199 euro (based on 4 people). Prices depend on group size; check with the operator.
- Tips
- Wear a life jacket, bring sun protection, a hat, insect repellent and a dry bag for phone and camera. No experience is needed for most day trips.
