Brownsberg Nature Park lies on the Mazaroni plateau, about 500 metres up, overlooking the Brokopondo Reservoir. The park covers some 12,000 hectares of mountain rainforest and is managed by STINASU. It is the easiest place near Paramaribo to see real highland jungle.
Visitors hike forest trails to the Leo and Irene waterfalls, take in the view over the lake and look out for howler monkeys, spider monkeys, toucans and many other birds. Most people come on a day tour, often combined with a night on the lake at Ston Island.

- About 130 km south of Paramaribo, roughly 2 to 2.5 hours by car
- Getting there
- Paved road to Brownsweg, then about 11 km of steep unpaved road up to the plateau. A 4x4 is needed, especially in the rainy season, so most visitors join a tour
- Time needed
- A full day. Leo Falls is about 45 minutes on foot from the plateau and Irene Falls about 45 minutes further
- Entry and permits
- A park fee is charged by STINASU and is normally included in day tours; check the current rate with your operator
- Best time to go
- The dry seasons, roughly February to April and mid August to November, make the road easier; the waterfalls carry less water in dry spells
- Tips
- Visitor facilities on the plateau are basic and in need of repair. The government and STINASU announced restoration plans in October 2025
