The Commewijne River joins the Suriname River just east of Paramaribo. Its banks are lined with former colonial plantations such as Frederiksdorp, Mariënburg and Rust en Werk, and the mouth area is a good place to spot the Guiana dolphin, locally called profosu.
Most visitors take a full-day boat trip that combines dolphin watching, a plantation walk, lunch and often a stop at Fort Nieuw Amsterdam. It is the easiest way to see rural Suriname and its history in one day from the capital.
