Peperpot Nature Park surrounds a former coffee and cocoa plantation in Nieuw-Meerzorg, just across the Suriname River from Paramaribo. Old plantation buildings, canals and a former workers' village sit beside secondary forest that is privately managed as a nature reserve.
A main trail of about 3.2 km leads through the forest, and the park is popular for birdwatching, cycling and guided night walks. Monkeys, sloths, iguanas, toucans and parrots are often seen, and around 300 bird species have been recorded. It is the easiest jungle outing from the capital.
