The Sipaliwini Savanna lies in the far south of Suriname, along the border with Brazil, where the rainforest opens into grassland with rocky hills and forest islands. About 100,000 hectares are protected as a nature reserve, in place since 1972.
Wildlife includes the blue poison dart frog (okopipi), giant anteaters, jaguars, harpy eagles and savanna birds rarely seen elsewhere in the country. Trips are long expeditions combined with visits to Trio villages and suit travellers looking for true wilderness.
