Suriname has 746 confirmed bird species, from scarlet ibis and flamingos on the coast to cotingas, toucans and macaws in the forest. Peperpot Nature Park, just across the Suriname River from Paramaribo, is the easiest start: about 40 percent of the country's species have been seen there.
Further afield, Bigi Pan in Nickerie is known for wetland birds and scarlet ibis, while Brownsberg, Raleighvallen, Colakreek and Kabalebo offer forest species.

- Peperpot is a short drive from Paramaribo. Bigi Pan lies in the far west near Nieuw Nickerie, usually done as a long day or overnight trip. Kabalebo is reached by charter flight.
- Best time to go
- Birding is good all year. Go at first light, when birds are most active; specialist morning tours start around 06:30. The dry seasons make interior access easier.
- Time needed
- A morning tour takes about 4 to 5 hours. Bigi Pan is a 12-hour day trip from Nickerie or 2 to 3 days with an overnight stay.
- Entry and permits
- A guided morning at Peperpot costs about 75 euro per adult. Full-day birding at a lodge such as Kabalebo is around 299 US dollars per person. Check with the operator.
- Tips
- Bring binoculars, muted clothing, insect repellent, a hat and water. A local guide who knows the calls finds far more species.
