Paddling is one of the quietest ways to see Suriname's wildlife. Close to Paramaribo, guided kayak tours wind through the canals of Peperpot Nature Park, while day trips on the Brokopondo Reservoir weave between islands and the trunks of drowned trees.
Longer trips follow narrow black-water rivers through the Coesewijne savanna and swamp forest, drift down the Suriname River past Saramaccan villages and rapids, or spend several days on the remote Maratakka in Nickerie, sleeping in hammocks. Several interior lodges also lend kayaks for short outings on their river.
