Markt-Zuid, also called the Noodmarkt, is a covered public market on the Kankantriestraat in the south of Paramaribo. It was built around 1959 as a temporary market while the Centrale Markt was being rebuilt, and it never closed. Vendors sell vegetables, fruit and cold cuts, and there is a meat hall. It is open Monday to Saturday and much quieter than the Centrale Markt; by about 1 pm most stalls have packed up. The market is run by the district commissariat of Paramaribo Zuid, which plans to refurbish it with the stall fees.
