The Centrale Markt is Paramaribo's main public market, a large market hall on the Waterkant by the Suriname River. The ground floor is for fresh food: vegetables, tropical fruit, fish, meat, herbs and spices, with food stalls alongside. Upstairs you find clothes, cosmetics and household goods. The market is open Monday to Saturday from early morning, and most stalls wind down in the early afternoon, so come before noon. The Vreedzaam Market for Maroon herbs and medicinal plants is right next door. The aisles get crowded, so keep your phone and wallet close.
