The Vreedzaam Market, also called the Maroon market or Djoeka wojo, is in the old harbour shed directly east of the Centrale Markt on the Waterkant in Paramaribo. It has been a market since 1989. Mostly Maroon women sell medicinal plants and fresh herbs from the interior, bath herbs, seeds, roots, oils and items used in traditional healing and rituals. It keeps the same Monday to Saturday rhythm as the main market. Ask before you take photos: many vendors prefer not to be photographed.
