About Aboma

The aboma, the green anaconda, is the heaviest snake on earth, and Suriname is its home turf. It hangs in the shallows of rivers and swamps from Bigi Pan to the Coeroeni, eyes and nostrils just above the waterline, and lets dinner come to it. Fishermen tell aboma stories the way city people tell traffic stories: everyone has one, and every year the snake gets a little longer in the retelling.

This is the classic snake game with a Surinamese appetite, played as a journey. You start in the open lagoon of Bigi Pan and hunt your way through the mangrove roots of Commewijne, the drowned forest of the Brokopondo stuwmeer, the sandbanks of the Coppename, the narrow savanna creeks of the Sipaliwini and the rice dikes of the Nickerie polders. Eat the stage quota and a kreek opens; swim in and the next stage starts. Pirai are quick points, the kwikwi swims away from you, and the golden anjoemara is worth a fortune if you reach it before it escapes. Eat fast and the frenzy climbs to five times the points. Further in, kaaimannen patrol the water.

You get three lives, so one mistake does not end the hunt. Nobody plays one run. When the aboma finally runs out of luck, try Korjaal Run, Muskieto Survivor, Pe A De?, the Sabi Suriname quiz or the Switi Mini crossword.

Common questions

What is an aboma?

Aboma is the Sranantongo name for the green anaconda (Eunectes murinus), the heaviest snake on earth and a real resident of Suriname's rivers, swamps and flooded forests. It hunts by ambush from the water, which is exactly where this game puts you.

How do I play Aboma?

Swipe on the water to steer (arrow keys or WASD also work), or tap the left or right half to turn left or right. Every stage has a fish quota: eat it, then swim into the glowing kreek to clear the stage. Hit a wall, a kaaiman or your own body and you lose one of your three lives.

What are the stages?

You hunt your way across Suriname: the open lagoon of Bigi Pan, the mangrove roots of Commewijne, the drowned forest of the Brokopondo stuwmeer, the sandbanks of the Coppename, the narrow creeks of the Sipaliwini savanna and the rice dikes of the Nickerie polders. Kaaimannen patrol the later stages. After Nickerie the loop starts again, faster.

How does scoring work?

Pirai are quick points. The kwikwi, the armoured catfish, is worth double but swims away from you. The golden anjoemara appears every few catches and escapes after a few seconds. Eat fast and the frenzy multiplier climbs to x5, and every cleared stage pays a bonus. You also get one free moment to react before you crash into something.

Is it free?

Yes. Aboma is free, needs no app or account, and your best score is stored only in your browser.
