Plan Your Trip

Suriname Itinerary

Five, seven or ten days. City, plantations, jungle. Built from the places listed on this site.

Suriname rewards a slow start: one or two days in the capital, then outward by river and road. The five day core below works for any trip; the seven and ten day extensions reach the coast and the interior. Every stop links to a full page with photos, contact details and maps. Before you book anything, read The Basics for visas, SIM cards and money, and check our safety guide.

The 5 Day Core

Day 1

Paramaribo’s Historic Centre

Walk the UNESCO World Heritage inner city: the wooden cathedral, Fort Zeelandia and the Waterkant riverfront. Lunch at a roti shop such as Roopram, dinner at Souposo or Baka Foto inside the fort walls.

Day 2

Commewijne Plantation Loop

Cross the river for Fort Nieuw Amsterdam, the coffee trails of Peperpot Nature Park and the restored plantation at Frederiksdorp. End with a sunset boat trip on the Commewijne River looking for river dolphins.

Day 3

South to Brokopondo

Head inland to Brownsberg Nature Park, the plateau overlooking the vast Brokopondo reservoir. Howler monkeys at dawn, waterfall trails by day. Most travellers take a guided overnight package; see our tours and activities.

Day 4

Brownsberg to the City

Morning on the trails, then back to Paramaribo. Evening food crawl: Javanese warungs, Kyu Pho & Grill or teppanyaki at Ogi.

Day 5

Colakreek or Jodensavanne, Then Shopping

Swim in the tea-coloured creeks at Colakreek, or visit the Jodensavanne ruins. Last-minute gifts: see our shopping guide.

With 7 Days

Add two days on the coast. From February to August, the giant leatherback turtles nest at Galibi Nature Reserve, reached by boat from Albina. Outside turtle season, go west instead: the lagoons of Bigi Pan near Nickerie are one of the best birdwatching sites in South America, scarlet ibis included.

With 10 Days

Ten days unlocks the deep interior. Fly or boat into the Central Suriname Nature Reserve and climb the granite dome of Voltzberg at Raleighvallen, or stay in the Trio village lodge at Palumeu. These trips run as all-inclusive packages with local operators; compare options on our activities page.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days do you need in Suriname?

Five days covers Paramaribo and day trips. Seven days adds an overnight in the rainforest or on the coast at Galibi. Ten days lets you reach the deep interior, such as the Central Suriname Nature Reserve or Palumeu, which need flights or long boat journeys.

What is the best time to visit Suriname?

The long dry season from August to late November and the short dry season from February to April are the most comfortable windows. Sea turtle nesting at Galibi peaks roughly February to August.

Do I need a tour operator for the interior?

Yes, for almost all interior trips. Lodges, river transport and interior flights are sold as packages by local operators. Book ahead in the dry season; trips fill up.

Is Suriname expensive to travel?

Paramaribo is affordable by Caribbean standards. Interior packages cost more because of boat fuel and charter flights, typically the largest single expense of a trip.
