What are the top things to do in Suriname?▾
Popular options include a jungle or river trip into the interior, birdwatching, visiting Maroon and Indigenous villages, watching leatherback turtles nest at Galibi, and a walking tour of the historic inner city of Paramaribo.
When can you see sea turtles in Suriname?▾
Leatherback and green turtles nest on the beaches at Galibi roughly from February to August, with the main season around March to July. Tours run by boat from Albina.
Do I need a guide to visit the interior?▾
For most interior trips, yes. Travel into the rainforest is arranged through tour operators who handle permits, transport, guides and accommodation. Independent travel into the deep interior is difficult and not advised.
How many days do you need to see Suriname?▾
A week lets you combine Paramaribo with one interior trip, such as a few days at a jungle lodge or a visit to Galibi. Ten days or more allows a longer expedition or a trip to the Brownsberg and Brokopondo area.
Is Suriname good for birdwatching?▾
Very. The country has more than 700 recorded bird species. Peperpot Nature Park near Paramaribo is an easy place to start, and the interior reserves are home to macaws, toucans and the cock of the rock.
How much of Suriname is rainforest?▾
More than 90 percent of Suriname is still covered by tropical rainforest, among the highest share of any country. Much of it is protected, including the Central Suriname Nature Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
What is the best nature park to visit near Paramaribo?▾
Brownsberg Nature Park is the easiest to reach, about two to three hours from the city, with rainforest trails, waterfalls and views over the Brokopondo reservoir. Peperpot is even closer and good for birds.
Can you visit the Central Suriname Nature Reserve?▾
Yes, with planning. Access is usually by small plane to the Raleighvallen airstrip, followed by guided walks that include the climb up the Voltzberg granite dome. Trips are arranged through tour operators.
What wildlife can you see in Suriname?▾
The forests are home to jaguars, tapirs, giant river otters, monkeys, caimans and hundreds of bird species. Large mammals are never guaranteed, but rivers and reserves give good chances of monkeys, birds and caimans.
When is the best time to visit Suriname for nature?▾
The drier periods, roughly February to April and August to November, make trails and river travel easier. The forest is warm and humid year round, so pack light clothing, rain protection and insect repellent.
